ARGUMENTS
REASONING FOR CRIMINALIZATION:
States that maintain and support prostitution being criminalized seek to eradicate prostitution as a whole. The limitation on the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, stop the denigration of women as well as using them to make profit, cut back on crimes that go hand-in-hand with prostitution, and also change our societies moral views on sex and the role of women. The very criminalization of prostitution works to bring society to surround prostitution with a negative stigmatization which also greatly helps its elimination (Carrasquillo, 2014).
COUNTER ARGUMENTS:
When Prostitutions criminalization is questioned it is mostly because it is considered to be a victimless crime. There are two parties making a mutual agreement to have sex and there is therefore no apparent harm (Carrasquillo, 2014). The issue is then that it causes “indirect harm to the fabric of society” (Carrasquillo, 2014). This presents the argument that yes, prostitution is immoral, but should the courts have the ability to determine what is moral or immoral (Carrasquillo, 2014).
IN UNDERCOVER POLICE WORK:
Traditional feminists and critics argue that using women as undercover police officers shows just how much women in police are degraded. There is also the complication that those not seeking a prostitute but see the undercover police officer will later recognize her somewhere else while they are off duty. Actual female police officers say quite the opposite of the job though. These officers find that the undercover police work is exciting and adds some variety in their careers that help them advance. They are not part of the mundane duties patrol work offers and are instead leading undercover operations. However, it is more expensive and more difficult for police departments to use undercover female officers. For many that seek sex from a prostitute it is not difficult to pick out an undercover prostitute. Usually prostitutes around them go elsewhere and they are therefore alone, they are generally a lone good looking woman in a group of prostitutes, and some aren't allowed to enter the car of the solicitor and instead lean through the window. Female officers therefore require more safety (additional officers who are placed nearby) than do males who can go in alone without close-by protection (Dodge, 2005).
