WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT PROSTITUTION?
Prostitution is a business that degrades women. There are women who go into the trade willingly, but then there are the women who are forced into the trade either due to human trafficking, to support a drug addiction, or because they are desperate for money. The women who are assigned to pimps have their spirits broken so that they follow orders. The pimps beat these women, sexually assault them, or force them to do drugs. After abusing these women for a period of time the pimps then back off to give them a false sense of hope and make them more susceptible to listening to orders that just weeks before they would never listen to. Even in legal brothels the work is not as glamorous as it is made out to be. One woman talks about her time working at the Bunny Ranch in Nevada, from the show Cathouse on HBO, and gives an insight how it can be almost like being a street walker in some instances. The difference in a brothel is a woman has the right to turn down customers if she choices, however, if a customer is given a sort of gift card for time with any girl he choices, the girl has to do it or face termination. The man also gets anything he wants, for as long as he wants. Even in brothels, these women can be exploited. In a moment in history where we seek to treat women with respect and dignity, we can't accomplish this goal by exploiting these women in this manner.
